This year marks a special moment for the Taizé prayers in Groningen: a new beginning at a new location and the celebration of its 30th anniversary.
Thirty years ago, at the request of the brothers of Taizé (France), Taizé prayers were established in various places across the country, including Groningen. In the early years, the prayer gatherings were held in people’s homes, later searching for and finding a place in different locations and churches throughout the city. Throughout all these years, the prayers have been supported by the dedication of visitors, volunteers, singers, and musicians.
At the end of 2025, it became clear that a new location for the Taizé prayer was needed on short notice. At the same time, the number of regular volunteers had decreased in recent years. This led to conversations about the future of the prayer: was this perhaps the moment to stop, despite the 30th anniversary? Ultimately, the organizers decided to continue, driven by the enduring enthusiasm for Taizé in Groningen. That enthusiasm was confirmed when the Mennonite Church welcomed Taizé Groningen with open arms. The first Taizé prayer there took place in April.

On Wednesday evening June 10th, 2026, Taizé Groningen will celebrate its 30th
anniversary. In recent months, visitors were invited to write down and share their memories of Taizé on a bulletinboard after the services. These memories will receive a special place during the anniversary service. After the service, there will be an opportunity to meet one another while enjoying some food and drinks.
Because it is no longer known who has been involved with Taizé Groningen over the years, the organizers are issuing a call. Before the service, there will be an opportunity for people who have helped with the prayer in the past to share a meal together and rehearse the songs. Anyone who has helped in the past and has not yet received an invitation can get in touch via info at taizegroningen . nl or our social media.
